BOTB May

Hey, hi! Glad you stopped by ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Battle of The Bands (BOTB) is your basic Which-do-you-like-best contest where the one that gets the most votes wins. All you have to do is show up (the 1st of every month) give a listen and cast your vote in the comment section. Votes will be tallied, and the winner revealed on or about the 8th day of the month.

Iโ€™m doing this post from the summer house, where half of my files have not or will not transfer. Bear with me, folks; this should be interesting ๐Ÿ˜Š

On this day in 2006, Guinness certified a new world record for the most guitars playing at once when 1,581 axe people simultaneously performed the Jimmy Hendrix version of โ€œHey Joeโ€ in Wroclaw, Poland.

During a press conference held in 1975 at the 5th Avenue Hotel in New York City to announce the Rolling Stones’s upcoming American Tour, the Stones themselves came down the street playing live from the back of a flatbed truck! I doubt anyone would try that in New York (or anywhere?) these daysโ€ฆas times, they are a changing.

Change is the theme for this battle. The hauntingly beautiful song was written by Klaus Meine and Rudolph Schenker.ย ย  The Scorpions released the single, which became a worldwide hit in January of 1991. ย As of last year, the band still performs the song live with lyrical changes reflecting current world circumstances.

So, there you have it, Folks. Which do you like best? After you vote, and before you go – I highly recommend visiting the rest of the BOTB participants โ€“ theyโ€™re pros! And a few of them hold two battles a month! Hereโ€™s where to find them:

  1. The piano player is indeed good, but there’s more to like with the first version.

Give my vote to the saxophone and friends cover.

    1. Hi John!
I think most people feel that way. The saxophone isnโ€™t just the only brass woodwind; the conical, rather than cylindrical, bore design allows a much broader (sound) range in terms of emotional expression so essential to jazz music. I love jazz and admire anyone who plays the sax. Another vote for the saxophone โ€“ thank you!

I’m posting this comment from my Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring house where I got too-little sleep last night, so this should be interesting…

That was a very pretty ballad and a good match-up. And you’ve got me curious to find out how the lyrics have changed with time and the wind.

I think CAThy nailed it when she said the saxophone version seemed “warmer”. Plus, the saxophone is my 2nd favorite musical instrument whole the world, so that added to my enjoyment of the first recording. (The whistlin’ was nice, too.)

I gotta go with the SAX!
And my brother, the Judge, he ruled for the SAX, also.

The piano version is too good for it to get shutout, so I’m hoping one of the famous Shutout Busters will come along here eventually and put that piano on the scoreboard.

    1. Hi Stephen T!
Ouch. I hope you catch up on your sleep.
I’m curious about the lyrical adjustment too. I don’t even know if they’re still touring in the U.S.
Glad you mentioned the ‘whistlin’. It’s kind of wistful, I think. It’s actually what drew me to the song.
TWO more votes for the Sax, and if you happen to see any Shutout Busters, send them my way, would ya?
      Thanks!

  3. I liked both but I prefer the Piano version over the Sax. It just sounds more melodic, tranquil and I was not into jazz for this song so this works better for me. It sounds so clean.

  4. HI diedre! ๐Ÿ™‚ Scorpions are one of my all-time favourite bands and this song is a classic! ๐Ÿ’– We saw them perform it live last summer, honouring Ukraine. How sad that war is ongoing!

Both instrumentals are excellent, but there’s nuthin’ like good sax, is there? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Gotta go with that one! ๐ŸŽท

    1. Hi Debbie!
You saw the Scorpions last year? How fantastic is that?! The first time I heard this song (literally three weeks ago!) I could not get it out of my head.
Ha! Aren’t we sassy today ๐Ÿ˜‰ Right as rain, I say, as I also say, another vote for the Sax – thanks!

      1. Scorpions have many excellent ballads (along with their hard rock stuff). We’ve seen them several times over the years and I’ve written about them a time or two. They have one of the best live shows around!

Looks like good Sax is popular with most voters. ๐Ÿ˜‰
